UK'S FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE COSTS OF HONG KONG'S CAMPS

UK contributes in various direct and indirect ways to cost of

Hong Kong's refugee camps: we contribute substantial amount of funds

of UNHCR (£17.6 million in 1987), part of which is used to alleviate

refugee problem in Hong Kong. We shall be pressing UNHCR to

contribute more to the camps.

EX-CHINA VIETNAMESE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS (EVCIIS)

Over 7,000 Vietnamese previously settled in China came to

Hong Kong between mid-June and October 1987. Following

consultations with the Chinese they were almost all repatriated to

China before the end of last year.

A small number (223 on 1 June) remain in Hong Kong.

UNITED KINGDOM POLICY TOWARDS VIETNAM

However,

We maintain normal diplomatic relations with Vietnam.

development of relations inhibited by Vietnam's continued illegal

Occupation of Cambodia and its poor human rights record.

We do not give aid to Vietnam, and do not propose doing so while present circumstances continue.

-

Vietnam's readiness to accept back its own people would be one of the matters to be taken into account in considering any possible resumption of aid to Vietnam.
