To consolidate the recent improvement in relations with Malaysia while keeping a close watch on the more uncertain internal political situation there.

To develop closer links with the new generation of leaders in Singapore and to pursue Mr Pike's ideas for promoting the UK as a centre of technological excellence.
10. To ensure the effective implementation and operation of agreements and arrangements in ASEAN countries to create the right climate for inward investment.

11. To achieve early implementation of the £140 million soft loan in Indonesia and to pursue the case for a further soft loan.
12. To resolve the problems for defence sales posed by the Thai Fiscal Act and to secure some major civil and defence contracts in Thailand.
13. To achieve defence sales to Brunei under the Bruneian Procurement Plan.
14. To provide appropriate UK support to ASEAN and to Sihanouk in negotiations for a Cambodian settlement.
15. To keep under review a more active role for the UK in a Cambodian settlement e.g. in an international conference.
16. To pursue with Western Partners and the UNHCR a strategy to persuade Vietnam to adopt a more flexible policy
