economies and devalue their currencies. Japan should play its part in bringing pressure to bear on those two countries.

In the South Pacific, the UK had significant diplomatic presence and a significant aid programme. The UK and Japan should keep in close touch at official level, especially in view of the risks of extension of Soviet influence in the region.

9. Mr Uno said that the Japanese Government would be ready to accept more Hong Kong refugees for resettlement. The problem was that they received few applications from refugees wishing to come to Japan, perhaps because of language barriers or because they favoured other countries like the United States. The Japanese Government would make efforts to take as many as possible.

ASEAN countries had. spent a great deal of time in discussing Cambodia. They had reached two conclusions: firstly, that Vietnamese troops must withdraw and secondly, that Sihanouk was the only viable leader for Cambodia. The Japanese had invited Sihanouk to come to Japan.

11. Mr Uno agreed with the Secretary of State's analysis of the South Pacific. It was important not to underestimate the potential for Soviet and Libyan encroachment.
