Thank you for your letter of 13 April on behalf of
your constituent, Mrs M Crouch of Shiplake, about Le Van Dong, a Vietnamese refugee in Hong Kong.
си
We have made enquiries in Hong Kong on Mrs Crouch's
behalf. We have ascertained that Le Van Dong has indeed
been accepted for resettlement by the Canadian authorities
but remains at the Argyle Street Reception Centre in Hong Kong for the time being, pending his departure for Canada.
He has certainly not been overlooked. However it seems that
fairly lengthy delays between acceptance and resettlement are
not uncommon, while the necessary arrangements for refugees'
reception in Canada are made. We have arranged for the
Hong Kong representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to explain the situation to Le Van Dong personally, which will I hope serve to allay his fears.
The Hong Kong Government have undertaken to let us have
his departure date as soon as it is known and we will be
happy to pass it on to your constituent.
I am returning your constituent's letter. We have taken
a copy for our files.
