FOREIGE SEC.- LADKI

-12-

QUESTION:

To go back to perhaps to your visit to the UN and your talks

with Mr.Shevardnadze, did you again raise the question of the Iran- Iraq war, the UN Resolution and its enforcement and do you see any

movement on that front?

FOREIGN SECRETARY:

I did discuss that, yes. Our primary focus on that topic there was the need to support the Secretary-General's mission in trying to secure compatible responses from both sides to the Resolution 598 but, of course, I referred again to the underlying importance of being willing to give authority to that by the arms embargo and that was understood, but we were discussing, basically, the responses by Iran and Iraq to the UN SG's approaches.

QUESTION (SAME PERSON):

Is there any movement?

FOREIGN SECRETARY:

I could not offer you any identifiable evidence this morning.

SIMON SCOTT (DAILY TELEGRAPH):

You mentioned in your visit to Hong Kong that the situation

of the Vietnamese refugees was intolerable.

After your talks with

Ir. Shevardnadze in New York, do you see any outcome to that or

are

we going to see, as far as you can tell, a continuing massive influx of economic refugees into Hong Kong for the foreseeable future?
