The Future

19. It is now becoming increasingly difficult to predict the rate of resettlement. There are only five ongoing resettlement programmes: US, Canada, Australia, UK and HK. But with stricter criteria now force it is not possible to predict how many refugees will qualify for these programmes. The presentTM estimate is that about 260 refugees will be resettled in February. In addition, there are other programm limited to accepting refugees for family reunion or to refugees rescued at sea by vessels flying the flags or owned by, traditional maritime countries.

20. It is equally difficult to estimate the rate of arrivals. Based on recent arrival patterns, it is estimated that there will be 1 350 arrivals in the next three months against 600 departures, and that about 10 500 refugees will be awaiting resettlement in Hong Kong by the end of April 1988.
