A round-up of media reports and commentaries
on the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station 23.7.88 17.8.88
Wednesday, August 3 The HK Standard reported that the NCNA HK branch was expected to play a significant role in the safety consultative panel of the $28.8 billion Daya Bay nuclear plant.
The paper said that it was understood that the branch office would provide back-up services to the panel, although their exact role had yet to be defined.
Writing in the South China Morning Post, Andy Ho said that sceptics believed that the panel would do little to allay local fears about the project as the panel was toothless.

Saturday, August 13 The inauguration of the Nuclear Safety Consultative Committee for the Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station yesterday was given prominent and extensive coverage by the media.
Some papers, including Ming Pao, highlighted in headlines that the committee would neither have a legal status nor monitoring power.
The committee would only give suggestions to the Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Company on the safety of the power plant.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, committee chairman Wong Po-yan said that the power to monitor the power plant was vested in the China Nuclear Industry General Company.
However, the committee would reflect HK people's views to the related authorities.
Media reports carried a Government statement which quoted the Secretary for Economic Services, Anson Chan, as saying that the Government welcomed the establishment of the committee.
The committee would provide an opportunity for HK people to express their views on the operation and safety aspects of the power plant project, Mrs Chan said,
Some papers quoted the general manager of the Guangdong Nuclear Power JVC, Zan Yunlong, as saying that most of the construction work delayed as a result of the "missing bar incident" last year had already been caught up.
Should no unusal incidents happen, the construction work should
meet schedule within this year, Mr Zan said.
