HK would be ready to deal with a nuclear accidant at China's Daya Bay plant, if rucommendations from e specially-commissioned report ware implemented, the HK Standard reported prominently.

The paper said that the report rejected the need for an overall avacuation plan because it said the nuclear plant was 50 kilometres-- from HK.

PAS for Economic Services John Wilson told the paper that it wes not desirable to release details of the report at the moment.

Quoting a Government official, the paper said that there was no need to establish new departments to deal with a potentiel disaster.

"We only need to build up the emergency task force from the existing structure," the official said,

Tuesday, Jaz 5 The Government was studying a plan under which en environmental protection branch would be set up this year to handle HK's pollution problems as well as environmental issues that might ariee from the Daya Bay plant, Sing Tao Wan Pao reported prominently, quoting s source. A similar story also appeared in the HK Daily News and Sing Tao Jih Pao the following day.

China's National Nuclear Safety Administration had approved a construction permit for the nuclear power plant at Days Bay, the papers reported, some prominently, quoting an NCNA dispatch from Peking,

Sunday, Jan 10 - An anti-nuclear group in HK was planning to hold an Asian anti-nuclear conference here in early June, several papers reported.

It was thought that about 30 representatives from anti-nuclear groups in HK and other places in Asia would take part in the conference,

Monday, Jan 11 A nuclear safety advisory body comprising representatives from Chine and HK would hopefully be sat up this year, Radio-1 and some papers raported, quoting the convenor of the Legco ad hoc group on the Daya Bay project, Wong Po-yan.

He was quoted as saying that NGNA HK branch officiels had numerous contacts with the Lagco group on the matter.

According to Mr Wong, the Legno group would continue to monitor the safety of the Daya Bay plant even after the advisory body was set

up.
