The layout of the site working and storage areas was orderly and neat. The materials (mainly reinforcing) appeared to be well identified and were being brought

to the working area in marked lots.

3.5 Safety

There was a first aid post at the side of the main

working area and a first aid stretcher cradle was available to be lowered into the working area by one of the cranes in the event that an injured person needing to be lifted from the excavated working area. No ambulance was observed but it was understood that there

was a clinic elsewhere on the site. The extent of

medical facilities was not observed.

Hard hats were in evidence although some workers were observed without hard hats.

The visit party walked through part of the construction site and one of the later GEC personnel noted that a bundle of reinforcing was lifted over him whilst he was walking across the reactor area. Apparently no

warning was given.

3.6. Conclusion

No specific conclusions could be drawn from the visit

since in overall construction terms the works were still at a very early stage. However, the general impression was of a reasonably well laid out construction site with the works proceeding in a controlled manner.
