Friday, Jan 15 - The Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Company signed several contracts last night for the installation of nuclear facilities at the Daya Bay nuclear plant, a few papers reported, quoting a China News Service dispatch from Shenzhen,
Ta Kung Pao reported that the JVC had stated that the contracts were very important in the construction of the nuclear plant.
Monday, Jan 18 - The Harwell report, which was still being translated into Chinese for release in February, stated that there was no need for HK to draw up any evacuation plan to cope with a nuclear accident at the Daya Bay plant, Sing Tao Wan Pao reported. (Note: a similar story appeared in several papers the next day)
Wednesday, Jan 27 Atmospheric radiation in HK increased in the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster two years ago but the levels were not high enough to threaten health, the SCM Post reported, quoting a scientific officer with the Royal Observatory, Leung Wing-mo.
The radiation level was still tens of thousands of times below the accepted international limit.
In a separate report, the paper said that HK would continue to participate in the activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency after 1997.
This was agreed at the end of a two-day meeting of a standing sub-group of the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group.
