As far as the Washington Office is concerned, you may wish to know that the stock market situation in Hong Kong has generated considerable interest among our Congressional contacts, and representatives of trade organizations and public policy think-tanks. In this respect, I should report that since May this year, I have instituted a system of regular working lunches with Congressional staffers and for the past two months, the first subject raised at these lunches was invariably in relation to Hong Kong's stock market.

While the opinions expressed by these contacts generally reflected the negative comments in the media, most of them believed that the damaged image could be repaired with appropriate remedial
measures,
