Some qualitative information on the

recent trend of capital investment was

obtained by the Industry Department during

regular factory visits and from general

contacts with manufacturers. The

information, which is largely specific in

nature and probably subjective, is summarised

below :-

(i)

Manufacturers' investment

intentions varied among

different industries in the

third quarter of 1988,

depending mainly on the demand

for their products in the

overseas market. While

manufacturers in the

electronics and metal products

industries were more inclined

to invest in new or upgraded

equipment, investment in such

industries as plastics and textiles was generally

sluggish.
