The Chinese Government have given us a reassuring explanation of how they see the role of the Chinese military forces to be stationed in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region after 1997. These will have the responsibility for defence in accordance with the provisions of the Joint Declaration. They will not interfere in the internal administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region.
