RESTRICTIONS ON THE PRESS: PUBLIC ORDER (AMENDMENT) ORDINANCE

This is primarily a matter for the Hong Kong Government. On 31 January they announced that at the end of the year they would review the provision on the publication of false news that might threaten public order. This follows from the Hong Kong Government's earlier commitment to monitor the situation carefully and to review it in

the light of experience.

The provision is in no sense a new one, having been part of the laws of Hong Kong for years. And it is evident to anyone who reads the Hong Kong press that they have been in now way inhibited passing of the ordinance. They remain as free and outspoken in

their comment as ever.
