This sustained level of interest is very

welcome to the Government. It is also a

source of reassurance and encouragement to the

people of Hong Kong. As I discovered during

my recent visit to the territory, the

continuing commitment of the Government and of

Parliament to Hong Kong is greatly valued.

Our first debate on Hong Kong this year

focussed largely on representative government

in the territory. I later made a statement on

the White Paper published by the Hong Kong

Government on the same issue. That document

attracted some criticism in this House at the

But it is now clear that it has been

generally well received in Hong Kong. Most

people there regard it as a forward-looking

time.
