I wanted to let you know how grateful we were to you for taking the time to come to London to speak to Members of Parliament and the press in advance of

Wednesday's debate on Hong Kong. It was of the greatest importance to ensure that people here should gain a balanced and representative picture of opinion. in Hong Kong, and I believe your visit helped significantly

to achieve that objective.

We were all reasonably content with the outcome of the debate: not only was there widespread appreciation of

the realities within which we need to develop our policies

on Hong Kong: there was also ample evidence of the importance which MPS attach to Hong Kong and of the deep sense of responsibility which we feel for all its people.

It was also a great pleasure to see you again.
