HONG KONG DEBATE, 20 JANUARY
1. I happened to see Mr Robert Adley MP at an ASEAN lunch today. We had a word about last week's Hong Kong debate in the Commons Mr Adley said he had been in frequent touch with Mrs Zhang Youyun of the Chinese Embassy since the Debate. She had been very cross at the way in which Mr Kaufman had misrepresented the Chinese position, quoting her. Mr Adley had written to Mr Kaufman pointing this out. Mr Kaufman had had the grace to admit that his description of the Chinese position had been mistaken. Mr Adley under- stood that he had also written to Mrs Zhang to apologise.
