RESTRICTED
JOINT FUNDING SCHEME AND NEW SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME
Her Majesty's Government and the Hong Kong Government are mindful of the great mutual benefits that are derived through students from Hong Kong studying in the United Kingdom. Since 1983 the two governments have contributed to a means-tested fee support scheme which has enabled over 5,000 needy students to study in our universities. The two governments have recently decided to maintain the fund at current levels for a further two years. In addition they will place greater emphasis on our existing merit scholarship scheme. Funding for the latter will be substantially increased from the £40,000 currently available.
At present about 6,000 Hong Kong post-secondary students are
studying in the United Kingdom. Of these about 1300 are taking
post-graduate courses.
