UK'S FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE COSTS OF HONG KONG'S

The United Kingdom contributes in various direct and indirect ways to the cost of Hong Kong's refugee camps. We contribute a substantial amount annually to the funds of the UNHCR (£17.6 million so far this year), part of which is used to alleviate the refugee problem in Hong Kong. We also donated £16,000 for 1986/87 to the Save the Children Fund's budget for their work in Hong Kong Vietnamese refugee camps.

This House should also not forget that since 1975 we have taken in some 13,000 Vietnamese refugees from Hong Kong. In financial and practical terms our response to this problem has been a very creditable one.
