Lord Glenarthur explained the efforts we were already making
to resist protectionist tendencies, eg over dairy products from New Zealand, the oil and fat tax and the CAP. Mr Pike explained that "1992" related solely to the internal market. Action on the external front would take place within the Uruguay round.
We hoped that Singapore would lend its
support to moves towards liberalisation within the GATT. BG Yeo said that as long as European producers remained competitive, he had few fears. But if the Europeans lost their competitiveness, this would lead to protectionism. Basically, as long as Britain had a strong Conservative Government
would be well.
