It may be worth recording that during the visit to Lisbon this week of two HKGO representatives based in Brussels, Dr Carlos Gaspar (adviser on Macau to President Soares) mentioned that there had been an "informal" trade mission from Macau to the USSR. This had been generally unsuccessful. A reciprocal inward Soviet mission to Macau had resulted. But although the USSR had expressed an interest in a more permanent arrangement, the Portuguese had no intention of allowing this and would adopt the same position as Hong Kong.
