The Advisory Committee on Social Work
Training is to discuss this issue in June and will, I
hope, give advice on both a short-term and a long-term
strategy to cope with this problem.

Mr. Hui stressed the need for social workers to
be provided with in-depth training to assist them to
respond to the increasing range and complexity of their
responsibilities. Specialised and advanced training in
the form of full-time overseas courses are provided but
inevitably only a limited number of staff can be so
trained each year. In addition, short courses and
workshops are constantly being provided locally in
specialist areas such as child abuse and delinquency.
As to the idea of a registration system of
social workers, I understand that the profession and the
ari Hong Kong Council of Social Service is considering a
These
voluntary system, and I shall certainly follow this
developments with interest.
