Question: Will Government inform this Council whether it

has considered and accepted a proposal to

upgrade the electricity voltage in Hong Kong

to 220 volts and if so, when will it be implemented?

No decision has yet been taken on whether Hong

Kong's electricity voltage should be upgraded to 220

volts. This proposal has implications both for the power

companies and for consumers. The Government is studying

this issue with the assistance of its consultants as part

of an overall examination of the technical aspects of

system planning by the two power companies. Before

recommendations can be put to the Executive Council, it

will be necessary to consult all parties concerned. I

will be able to

hope that we can make further progress in the course of

this year.
