Dear Simon,

Hong Kong

I appreciate the need to satisfy the Middle Kingdom that H.M.G. are not going to rock the boat, but

20th century history shows that if you once hand over a subject people to a Communist power, their future does not improve and it is one more dominoe that falls against us.

Is it really impossible to allow Hong Kong citizens to participate in proper elections pre-1997?

Is it not pure illusion and humbug to assume that U.K. trade with China is worth more than the freedom of a people in a post-colonial era a people we were once responsible for?

-

Somehow the stock F.0. response (after your goodself failed to see the recent Hong Kong delegation) that they were merely seeking press coverage in Hong Kong was very unconvincing.

Are we not abandoning these people precipitately?
