Lord Young

Mr Luce

Sir Peter Swinnerton-Dyer,

Thank you for your letter of 8 December.

Elspeth

and I enjoyed seeing you during your October visit, and

look forward to our next meeting.

In your letter, you asked whether British firms

might wish to contribute to part of the cost of the

Ningbo library. The British Overseas Trade Board have

asked the Sino-British Trade Council to sound out

discreetly a number of suitable British companies to see

if this might be feasible. We will come back to you when

we have the results of these enquiries.

We have kept the Office of Arts and Libraries

informed of your plans, but it will be the University

Grants Committee, under its Chairman, Sir Peter

Swinerton-Dyer, who will be able to provide you with

specific advice on the type and location of the proposed

library in the UK. Please do not hesitate to contact Sir

Peter, though I hope you will continue to keep us

informed here.
