a short fuse and takes no trouble to hide irritation or
boredom. He has travelled frequently and visited Britain
twice, as a Vice-Minister of power in 1982 and again in
1986 with Hu Yaobang. His wife, Zhu Lin, is a
representative in Peking of the Guangdong Nuclear power
joint venture company. Their two sons and a daughter
work in the electric power sector. He speaks fluent
Russian and some English. His hobbies are reading and
cooking Sichuan style food.
