Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts

The Academy which HRH will visit on Thursday,

28th May was opened in October 1985 and is a premier

institution of its type designed to accommodate 600

students in dance, drama, music and technical arts on full

development. Another feature is the neighbouring Hong

Kong Arts Centre which was opened in 1977 and offers

facilities for performing arts performances, and gallery

exhibitions. The Academy was built with a $300 million

donation from the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club on a site

granted by the Government (which will also meet recurrent

costs); while the Arts Centre was built from private

donations once again on a site provided by the Government.

Tsim Sha Tsui East

An area of about 25 hectares of land east of

Tsim Sha Tsui and directly across the Harbour from the

Academy was reclaimed from the sea and developed into one

of the leading commercial and entertainment centres in

Hong Kong. The area is easily distinguished by its new

office blocks, first-class hotels and shopping arcades.

As a commercial and tourist area, Tsim Sha Tsui East is a

popular attraction both to local residents and to overseas
