The Malaysian Attorney General's chambers is currently reviewing the proposed extradition treaty text given to Malaysia in November, 1986. Upon completion of the review, the Attorney General will formally ask the cabinet for approval to begin treaty negotiations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects to receive cabinet approval by the end of the summer.

Contrary to expectations, asset seizure legislation, drafted in 1986, was not presented to Parliament for consideration during its last session which ended on July 11. The Anti-Narcotics Task Force reports that the decision to postpone came from Prime Minister Mahathir, for unknown reasons. The Task Force expects the asset-seizure legislation to be considered by the next sitting of Parliament in October.

In June, Malaysia hosted the ASEAN Women's Anti-Drug Parents' Movement in Kuala Lumpur, drawing government and community representation from around the region. The ASEAN Parents Movement against Drugs, inspired by similar efforts in the U.S., emphasizes education and counseling to prevent drug abuse.
