Interdiction Efforts: Both the Burma Army (BA) and the People's Police Force (PPF) have been active in interdiction activities. Major seizures during the first six months of 1987 include:

PPF task force seizure of 22.25 kilograms of heroin No. 4 in Lashio in January.

PPF seizure of 150 gallons of acetic anhydride in Mandalay division in January.

PPF seizure of 140 gallons of acetic anhydride at Meiktila in February.

BA seized 113 kilograms of opium and six gallons of acetic anhydride in separate cases in April.

Other Enforcement Efforts: The BA has put pressure on narcotics caravans moving to the borders. resulted in several battles and significant loss of life for both the BA and the insurgents. Major BA actions include:

Mohein Eleven, a BA operation against Shan United Army (SUA) refineries near Mongkan, resulted in destruction of four refineries and seizure of refining equipment and chemicals estimated to be worth one million dollars.

Seizure of a major BCP heroin refinery in Panghsai on the border with the PRC.

Major operations against trafficking/insurgent groups with increasing military successes, including caravan blockades which have hurt trafficking groups badly.

Drug Prevention

Prevention Efforts: SRUB data continue to show decline in heroin

in heroin addiction in Burma. However, there is a continued increase in polydrug and alcohol abuse. The SRUB continues its intensive anti-drug campaign in the schools, media, and through all sections of the society.
