I said that the last piece of advice seemed sensible. At the end of the day a modus vivendi would have to be worked out.

5. Mr Pemberton did not ask for FCO intervention and I obviously did not offer it. But it might be useful if I were to enquire how matters stand when I am in Hong Kong next week. I should be grateful for advice.

6. I should perhaps record that I have also heard BT's side of the story, though at much less length, from John King, BT's energetic Marketing Manager. Mr King was mentioned

at several points in Mr Pemberton's narration and is clearly one of the villains of the piece in the C & W view.
