World Press Freedom Committee Delegation

to

Hong Kong and Singapore

From June 15-20, 1987, a delegation of the World Press Freedom Committee met with journalists and officials of the governments of Hong Kong and Singapore to discuss recent actions restricting the free press.

Members of the delegation were: Leonard H. Marks, Chairman; George Chaplin, Cushrow R. Irani and Lord McGregor of Durris. A more detailed description of this dele- gation is shown on Attachment A.

This effort is the first action taken by the Fund Against Censorship, which was proposed at a meeting in London in 1987 attended by 150 editors from 34 countries and sub- sequently established by the conference's organizers. In ad- dition to the World Press Freedom Committee, the Fund includes the International Press Institute, International Federation of Newspaper Publishers, Inter American Press Association, North American National Broadcasters Associ- ation and the International Federation of the Periodical Press.

The WPFC represents 32 journalistic organizations from five continents. These include: American Newspaper Pub- lishers Association, National Association of Broadcasters, Inter American Press Association, Caribbean Publishing and Broadcasting Association, Society of Professional Jour- nalists, The Newspaper Guild, American Society of Newspa- per Editors, and similar organizations in Spain, Canada, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, Australia and elsewhere.
