WPFC FACT SHEET

The World Press Freedom Committee was activated in May 1976 by a group of international journalists to unify free- world news media for major threats that develop.

It unites under one banner 32 journalistic organizations on five continents, making it a strong global voice against those who seek to legitimize government control of news media, those who seek to deny truth in news, and those who abuse

newsmen.

Affiliates include American Newspaper Publishers Asso- ciation, National Association of Broadcasters, Inter Ameri- can Press Association, Caribbean Publishing and Broadcast- ing Association, Society of Professional Journalists, The Newspaper Guild, American Society of Newspaper Editors, and similar organizations in Spain, Canada, Venezuela, Co- lombia, Argentina, Australia and elsewhere.

The WPFC is in the forefront of efforts to support a free press and to assist news media:

• It was principal organizer of the 1987 World Conference on Censorship in London, attended by 150 editors, reporters, publishers and broadcasters from 34 countries. This confer- ence called for creation of a world Fund Against Censorship.

• It vigorously monitors threats to press freedom, serving as a watchdog for free news media at UNESCO, U.N., non- aligned and other conferences where the free press comes under attack.

It organized the two world meetings of news media lead- ers in Talloires, France. At the first, in 1981, participants approved the landmark Declaration of Talloires, setting out for the first time principles to which independent news media subscribe. At the second conference, in 1983, a first-ever world listing of training programs for Third World journalists was presented.
