(a) an inclined, continuous stairway which is driven by mechanical power and used for raising or lowering passengers; and

(b) a passenger conveyor that is a continuous walkway which is driven by mechanical power and used for the conveyance of passengers on the same or between different traffic levels;";

(d) by deleting the definition of “escalator works" and substituting

"escalator works" includes any kind of work, not being building works, connected with the installation, com- missioning, testing, maintenance, repair, alteration or demolition of an escalator or of the safety equipment provided for an escalator or of any other machinery or equipment connected with an escalator;";

(e) by inserting after the definition of "governor" the following---

""industrial undertaking" has the same meaning as in the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance;

"legal officer" has the same meaning as in the Legal Officers

Ordinance;";

Enacted by the Governor of Hong Kong, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof.

1. (1) This Ordinance may be cited as the Lifts and Escalators commencement. (Safety) (Amendment) Ordinance 1987.

Amendment of long title.

(Cap. 327.)

(2) This Ordinance shall come into operation on a day to be appointed by the Governor by notice in the Gazette and the Governor may appoint different days for different provisions.

2. The long title to the principal Ordinance is amended by inserting before "maintenance" the following-

Section 2(1) of the principal Ordinance is amended--

(a) by deleting the definition of "authorized architect" and substitut-

ing the following—

"authorized person" has the same meaning as in the

Buildings Ordinance;";

(b) by deleting the definition of "disciplinary board";

(c) by deleting the definition of "escalator" and substituting the

following

""escalator” means—

(ƒ) in the definition of "lift" by inserting after "guides" the following—

", but does not include an escalator";

(g) by deleting the definition of "lift works" and substituting the

following-

““lift works” includes any kind of work, not being building works, connected with the installation, commissioning, testing, maintenance, repair, alteration or demolition of a lift or of the safety equipment provided for a lift or of any other machinery or equipment connected with a lift;";

(h) in both definitions of "owner" by deleting "the Colony" wherever

it occurs and substituting in each case the following-

“Hong Kong”;

(i) by deleting the definition of "prescribed";

(j) in the definition of "registered escalator contractor" by deleting "8 of the Buildings Ordinance" and substituting the following

"11B";

(k) in the definition of "registered lift contractor" by deleting "8 of the

Buildings Ordinance” and substituting the following—

"11B";

(1) in the definition of "safety gear" by deleting the full stop at the end

and substituting a semicolon; and
