This Ordinance amends the Lifts and Escalators
(Safety) Ordinance for the purposes of
(a)

regulating passenger conveyors in the same way as escalators;
stipulating the qualifications and experience required of registered lift and escalator engineers;
transferring the responsibility for the registration and control of lift and escalator contractors from the Building Authority to the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services;
requiring serious accidents to be reported to the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services;
applying some of its safety provisions to non-industrial service lifts;
making unauthorized interference with lift or escalator installations an offence;
allowing lift and escalator works to be carried out only by registered lift or escalator engineers, competent experienced lift or escalator workers, or workers directly supervised by such engineers or workers;
enabling the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services to prescribe forms; and
(i)
empowering the Governor in Council to make regulations.

Before the Governor assented to the Bill in the name and on behalf of Her Majesty, the Attorney General advised that he could properly do so.
