CIVIL SERVICE BRANCH GOVERNMENT SECRETARIAT

LOWER ALBERT ROAD HONG KONG

29

16 April 1987

Dear De Campion,

I understand from Mr Patrick Sham, Director of the Royal Observatory, that you were enquiring about the present position regarding the filling of the Government Scientist post, since you had heard nothing further following Martin Rowlands' letter of 18 April 1985.

As anticipated in that letter (and again in his reply of 15 May to your letter of 7 May), it has taken some time for Government to review the requirement for the Government Scientist post. After very careful deliberation, it has been concluded that we should not now pursue our previous proposal for such an appointment, and that instead alternative arrangements should be made to establish a Science and Technology Committee comprising both Government and non- Government members to provide central guidance and coordination in this field.

I am grateful to you for continuing to show an interest in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Нашаш Carejal
