General Manager Zan Yunlong's reply to

questions on the Daya Bay nuclear safety

consultative body at the May 8 press conference

The Chinese Government has many times reiterated its stand of

support for the setting up in Hong Kong of a consultative body in relation

to the safety of the Daya Bay Nuclear Plant. The Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Co. is willing to cooperate with this body. Details of how we will work together and cooperate will be worked out after this body is

set up.

Related matters can be conducted through the Hong Kong Branch of

the New China News Agency.

2.

The consultative body in relation to the safety of the Daya Bay Nuclear Plant will be set up by the Hong Kong side and composed of Hong Kong people. The Chinese side will only provide coordination, support and cooperation. Once this body is established, it will be linked up with the nuclear safety organizations and joint venture companies in China. The Chinese Government and the Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Co. will give it support.

3.

Supervision involves legal questions. From the legal point of view, a supervisory body is one which exercises its power on behalf of the government. Under the law, a joint venture company must be subject to the supervision of a nuclear safety organization set up by the State.
