3. Construction Quality (Use of Second Hand Pumps)
All the permanently installed equipment for the Daya Bay plant will be new and manufactured specifically for this project. The equipment involved in the nuclear safety functions is subject to stringent quality assurance codes and procedures to ensure that the necessary standards are achieved. The majority of this equipment will be designed and manufactured in Europe.
The construction phase of the project on site involves firstly the civil works and then the installation of the permanent equipment. In order to
this construction it is carry out
necessary to use various temporary equipment such as cranes, concrete production equipment, concrete pumps, welding equipment etc. This equipment does not form part of the permanent installation and is removed at the end of the construction period.
It is normal for all types of construction sites that the temporary construction equipment is partly new and partly transferred from other sites. This will be the case for Daya Bay. However, all temporary construction equipment is subject to checks, overhauls and performance tests before and during use to ensure the necessary quality standards are achieved. Under no circumstances will sub-standard construction equipment be permitted on any part of the
de France have project. Electricite confirmed they use the same approach for the French nuclear programme.

Furthermore, the end product of the construction works, which includes reinforced concrete constructions, structural steelwork, welding pipework and installation of components etc, is itself subject
to detailed specifications and quality controls. JVC is establishing an extensive technical organisation on site to ensure that all construction work is completed in accordance with the specifications and that all the applicable quality standards are achieved.
extensive This organisation involves
participation by specialists from all the main contractors, and in
particular from Electricite de France who will carry overall technical responsibility.
Specifically for the concrete pumps, JVC is investigating the situation with the contractor concerned regarding use of new equipment.
