Our visit gained a high profile, but the press coverage was generally good. It become clear that Daya Bay is a very big issue in Hong Kong and our Contingency Planning Report, which will be made public, will receive very close scruting by the Governments of Hong Kong and China, by the anti-nuclear organisations, and many others. It is important that our report is comprehensive and robust enough to stand up well to such examination.
There were a few hints that this report could lead to new work being commissioned.
Without exception all departments we met were very helpful and keen to help us with our task. I was also pleased to find that the exisiting oranisation and facilities for dealing with other emergencies, such as typhoons, land slips, aircraft crashes, etc, were impressive.
Hong Kong is clearly looking to obtain a first rate emergency organisation and associated facilities notwithstanding the distance of Hong Kong from the reactor site.
I suspect that in a few years time they will have facilities and an organisation which is as good as any found in the UK or elsewhere in the world.
