Dear Mr Geddes
INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION ON THE HARMONISED COMMODITY DESCRIPTION AND CODING SYSTEM.

Our records show
My predecessor Charlotte Caplan was in touch with you during 1985 and early 1986 on the question of extension of the UK ratification of the above Convention to British dependent territories under Article 14 of the Convention. that Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man did wish to have the Convention so extended to them, but Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antartic Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falklands and Dependencies, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, St Helena and Dependencies and the Turks and Caicos Islands did not. However, we never received a definite answer from Hong Kong.
We are now working on the basis that the UK will ratify the Convention some time between late June and September, so it seems timely that we should clarify the position of Hong Kong. find out for us whether they have reached a decision yet ?
Could you
As far as the actual extension to dependent territories is concerned, Article 14 of the Convention suggests that it should be a simple process involving notification to the Secretary General of the Customs Co-operation Council. Such notification will presumably be lodged at the time of UK ratification. likely to be any hidden obstacles in this process ?
Are there advised by ECD (E) that you will require between two and six weeks We have been notice to draw up the required instrument for UK ratification. any action which may be necessary on the dependent territories side be accomplished within the same period of notice ?
Yours sincerely
Stephe
