It has been reported that some 30 to 40

bleaching and dyeing factories were opened

in 1986 to take advantage of the good

business conditions. They are mostly small factories using relatively cheap

locally produced machinery for the batch-dyeing of yarn;

(iii) There has been considerable investment in

the plastics industry. With China providing a ready market for second-hand

injection moulding machines from Hong

Kong, plastics manufacturers are more

willing to replace their old machines with

models of the latest design.

It is

estimated that orders for plastic

injection moulding machines amounting to

$150 million were placed in the fourth

quarter of 1986, representing an increase of about 50% over the previous quarter;

and

(iv)

In the watches and clocks industry, in the

light of more intensive competition from

Japan in the production of cheaper LCD and quartz analogue watches, local

manufacturers are investing more in

research and development activities in

order to improve the quality and design of their products.
