sector

Care should be exercised in interpreting

quarterly figures on completions because they are subject to short term fluctuations. Completions of

private industrial accommodation in the first

quarter of 1987 decreased by 26% in terms of floor

area over the same period in 1986 (Table 5).

Against this low level of supply, demand for

industrial floor space in the established

industrial areas, particularly Tsuen Wan, Kwun

Tong, and Kwai Chung, continued to be strong.

Demand in other relatively new industrial areas

like Kowloon Bay, Fo Tan, Yuen Long and Tuen Mun

also improved.

Completions of private sector office space

continued to decrease in the first quarter of 1987,

by 13% in terms of floor area over the same period

in 1986. On the other hand, after three years of

considerable decline, completions of private sector

shop premises increased substantially, by 170% in

the first quarter of 1987.

As regards private sector residential

property, the number of units completed in the

first quarter of 1987 was roughly the same as in

the same period in 1986.

As the quarterly figures on private sector completions are subject to short term fluctuations,

it is useful to look at the cumulative position

over four quarters. Comparing the 12 months ending March 1987 with the previous 12 months, completions
