Parties in the Private Sector. From time to time, it is necessary for the Director of Audit to refer in his report to the performance of parties in the private sector. Typically these are contractors or consultants employed on Government contracts. In general the first warning such parties have of these references is on publication of the Director's Report. It has been suggested to the Committee that this gives these parties very little time to respond to an invitation to appear before the Committee. This is because of the very tight schedule to which the Committee must work in order to table their Report within the statutory deadline (three months after the laying of the Director of Audit's Report). Under this schedule the Committee are obliged to hold their public hearings within two weeks of the tabling of the Director's Report and to commence drafting their report immediately thereafter. The Committee will consider how private sector parties might be allowed more time in the future to consider their response to an invitation by the Committee to give evidence.
