MR LEE: Mr Chairman, do you think that looking smart
is really necessary for maintaining discipline, efficiency or is
it just to satisfy personal vanity ?
S for S: No, it is definitely not. It is absolutely
crucial with disciplined services maintaining law and order in
public that they look efficient and effective. It is nothing to do with personal vanity. It is absolutely vital that the public
has the fullest possible confidence in them and sloppy policemen and sloppy Correctional Services, well, you have seen immigration
department staff outside Hong Kong, I won't mention any particular
countries where they do not exactly inspire confidence.
MR LEE: Just to satisfy my personal curiosity, are 15 women officers more particular about looking smart or men officers
more particular about looking smart or both more or less the same ?

S for S: However I answer that question, I will get it 19 wrong, so I will ask my colleague, my colleague has volunteered !

CCS: I know the women in Government to be very professional,
all they want to do is be the same as the men. They are not looking for something better. I can really assure you that is true.
And especially senior women officers in Government are probably more professional than the males. They just want a uniform
that is comparable with their male colleagues. They are not looking
for high fashion. We tried to change our women's shoes to
something more fashionable but they won't accept them. They prefer
something more practical. So I don't think they are looking for style and a fancy appearance.
MR LEE: The next question is directed to Mr Secretary.
Do you think that the made-to-measure uniforms manufactured by the
contractors have been satisfactory and whether there have been
any serious cases of made-to-measures not fitting and requiring
to be returned for alteration ?
