DFS, I am just curious about, mentioning

about this value for money study, a number of staff has been saving money, money side I understand.

But the 688 staff you mentioned

8 earlier, I am curious, are they redeployed or what are they doing?

DFS:

I am told that no redundancies have yet

had to be resorted to. This must mean either that in those departments there were opportunities for them to carry out other work or natural wastage has taken account of the large numbers. I believe, for example, that in some of the departments where there were large numbers involved, that they were employing quite a number of model scale staff, that is labourers and people of that sort, who were either at or slightly beyond retiring age.

So opportunities for such staff to continue

May I ask a small question. Referring to

27 the steering group for the Customs and Excise Department, you did

say that you have done some survey over there but the real steering 29 group hasn't been formed yet. It might take time. What do you

30 think the time would be, how long to wait until that can be formed?

I believe that we will be aiming to set it

up amongst the first group of new ones that we do set up, but there is a limit to how many committees we can service, that is really the difficulty. And servicing a committee is somewhat different from 36 actually carrying out the study. I mean the two have got to be closely
