response to changes in the pattern of demand.

(e) Land disposal

A total of 5.2 hectares of land were

offered for sale at Government auctions and by tender (including Letter A/B tenders) during the

first nine months of 1987. The sites offered

generally met with a favourable response, and the prices fetched were significantly higher than those for similar sites a year earlier. This shows that, up to the third quarter, developers remained optimistic about the outlook for the property market. They may become more cautious after the

crash in the world's financial markets, but there is little sign of this so far.

The demand for sites, in terms of applications received, in the Tai Po and Yuen Long Industrial Estates firmed up during the first nine months of 1987. About 83% and 22% respectively of these two Industrial Estates are now occupied. The take-up of sites particularly in the Tai Po Industrial Estate was active during the third

quarter (Table 7).

Some qualitative information on capital investment was obtained recently by the Industry Department during regular factory visits and from

general contacts with industrialists. The information, which is largely subjective, is
