I should be most grateful if you could pass on my thanks to all those in the Embassy who gave their help when we were in Peking last week for the expert talks on defence and public order. I am conscious that we must have been a rather disruptive presence, in particular because of the antisocial hours which we worked and the interminable telegrams which we sent. Carsten and Sue Pigott looked after us with great calm and efficiency. We are also most grateful to the secretaries who helped us out and to the communicators who transmitted our telegrams in the depths of the night.

2. Thank you in particular for inviting us all to dinner. It was a most pleasant occasion, and very relaxing after 3 days of polite conversation with our Chinese counterparts.
