DIRECTIVE TO THE COMMANDER BRITISH FORCES HONG KONG

References:

A. CDS 6/84 (Copy attached).

B.

CDS 7/87.

1. Reference A is CDS's Directive to the Commander British

Forces (CBF) Hong Kong. CBF Hong Kong has initiated a review of this Directive and the following amendment to Reference A, supported by the D Cts ROW Directorate, is proposed for approval by CDS:

Paragraph 5.

TASK

commitment

"Your task is to assist the Hong Kong

Government to maintain stability and security and to sustain confidence in HMG's intention to maintain the British position in the Territory until 30 Jun 97.

Paragraph 5b and 5c Delete and replace with the

following: "To be prepared, in the event of rising tension in Hong Kong to discourage intervention by Chinese forces in the internal affairs of Hong Kong."

2. These amendments are proposed in order to bring Reference A closer in line with Reference B, the Hong Kong Garrison Outline Withdrawal Plan.

3.

It is understood that CBF Hong Kong may propose further amendments in the future but this initial submission is forwarded for clearance so that proposed amendments to CBF's own directives to service commanders in theatre accord with the Commander's own directive.
