-

AREAS FOR FURTHER STUDY

1. Planning for reduction of the Hong Kong helicopter fleet requires further study into the following areas:

2

The Future Sovereign Force's Helicopter Support and Training Requirements. This study should aim to predict the flying task required to meet the Garrison training and support requirement during the following stages of rundown.

(1)

Simultaneous Half Company Lift Phase (with 2 HKGAW Dauphin Nls available to provide additional helicopter support).

(2) Simultaneous Platoon Lift Phase (for 3

and 2 battalions respectively in Territory).

(3)

Simultaneous Platoon Lift Phase (for a single

UK battalion in Territory).

The definition of flying task and IS Contingency requirement will enable the appropriate AE + IUR and the optimum mix of Wessex and Scout helicopters to be decided.

b. The Feasibility of Forming a Joint RAF/Army Helicopter Squadron. This study should aim to determine when, where and how a joint RAF/Army helicopter squadron could be formed. It should reflect the findings of the study at para la above and the availability of accommodation and hangarage at RAF Sek Kong. The question of command and control and the potential for contractorisation of the logistic support should also be considered.
