67. RAF and AAC. The current requirement to undertake a simultaneous helilift of half an infantry company calls for a force of 6 Wessex. The light helicopter support for the present garrison requires 6 Scouts. To meet these tasks, 28 Sqn RAF and 660 Sqn AAC both have an AE of 8 aircraft. line with the build-up of its own helicopter force, the Hong Kong Government has undertaken to provide 2 Dauphin helicopters to assist in garrison tasks from 1989 to about 1993. This would allow, from 1989, a reduction to 6 AE on both 28 and 660 Sqns which, subject to further study, might then merge to become a joint RAF/AAC unit. Once the RHKP have assumed all military tasks (from about 1993) the HKGAW's limited support for the garrison will cease; at this time, however, the garrison's requirement would reduce to a simultaneous single platoon lift which could be provided by 4 Wessex. Associated light helicopter support would require 4 Scouts, but once the Sovereign Force was reduced to a single UK battalion group the ultimate intention 3 Scouts would be adequate. Further study is required to define the optimum AE/IUR mix and UE of the helicopter force (beyond 1989) needed to meet the garrison's general training requirements and to ensure a reasonable probability of generating at short notice the minimum helicopter force required to support the HKG in a crisis (4 Wessex and 4/3 Scouts).
