SUPPORTING ARMS AND SERVICES

1.

The supporting arms and services will require further detailed study. It may well be possible to make satisfactory local contract arrangements to facilitate the reduction fr withdrawal of some support elements. However, this will not be practicable in certain areas; the following are seen as major considerations.

==

Engineers. Some reductions in Engineer support

will be possible as each battalion withdraws, but it will probably be necessary to retain at least a strengthened Field Squadron until 1997.

b. Signals. It may be possible to reduce QG Signals by one squadron, subject to the work load stemming from the withdrawal plan and the requirement to maintain a viable tactical HQ for 48 Gurkha Infantry Brigade. The rundown of QG Signals is a matter for further study.

C.

Transport. There is a case for the contractorisation of some transport services, for example staff cars, and ces, for example staff cars, and the arguments in favour of such a move are likely to strengthen with each reduction. Subject to further study it should prove possible to reduce by at least one GTR squadron on reduction to 3 battalions.

d. Medical The future of the BMH is the subject of study by joint HKG/HQBF working group. It will not be possible to produce a parallel medical support plan in any detail until forecast changes in the size of the dependent population are available. If BMH closes before 1997/it would seem sensible to provide medical support from an appropriately expanded Group Practice, provided
